What the work involves, part by part

Fan housings and motors

Motors and their electrics are kept dry and treated with care, and the fan is isolated throughout. Grease around the motor can make it run hotter, so the surrounding area is cleaned carefully.

Wall fans

Smaller kitchens may extract through a fan on an outside wall. It’s isolated, opened and cleaned inside and out.

Extract fan cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Chalkhouse Green

Cleaning removes grease, not wear. Anything that looks worn or damaged goes on the report, and we also repair and replace extract fans. You get an honest view of the fan’s condition. Common call-outs are for a fan that has never been cleaned and vibration from an unbalanced impeller, on axial fans, roof-mounted fans and fan housings.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Chalkhouse Green

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

Leave it or put it right?

An unbalanced fan gets worse, not better. It wears bearings and mounts and can lead to a breakdown and a kitchen cannot cook safely without extraction. Cleaning it early is far less disruptive. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Chalkhouse Green rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.

You won’t find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

Why us?

What extract fan cleaning looks like in Chalkhouse Green

The Food Standards Agency lists about 5 pubs, bars and clubs as registered food businesses in Chalkhouse Green and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Environmental health officers from South Oxfordshire council inspect food businesses in Chalkhouse Green. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. The fire and rescue service for Chalkhouse Green is Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

A hospital like Battle Hospital, about 2.8 miles south, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Saint Barnabas Emmer Green, or anywhere in Chalkhouse Green, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Keeping the system healthy

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Report grease escaping from the fan
  • Book the fan into every full TR19 clean
  • Flag smoke lingering at the canopy
  • Do not store items in front of the fan’s access point

If the fan needs more than a clean, we’ll say so plainly. Fan repair and replacement are services we offer too, so you have one point of contact.

Run the fan throughout cooking. Grease settles faster when the air stops moving, so keeping it running helps keep it clean.

Common questions in Chalkhouse Green

Which environmental health team covers Chalkhouse Green?

The local authority for Chalkhouse Green is South Oxfordshire council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Chalkhouse Green in the summer holidays?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. With about 4 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Chalkhouse Green, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Send us your term dates when you give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos, and we will fit the work in.

How long is a fan clean?

Allow a few hours where there are several fans or heavy deposits. We’ll confirm the time when we quote.

What if the fan needs more than a clean?

Cleaning removes grease, but it can’t fix worn parts. We repair and replace extract fans as well, with a fixed quote first.

What do you do with what you remove?

It’s contained and taken away. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it does not spread.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

By covering it before any work starts. The work is kept contained and leave the area clean.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

When it’s something else

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • An undersized fan that can’t cope
  • Grease in the duct and canopy before the fan (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • An impeller that is bent or split

If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • In-line fans
  • Discharge points
  • Centrifugal fans
  • Fan housings
  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Axial fans

The process

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes an hour or two for most single fans. Somewhere as small as Chalkhouse Green, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. First we locate the fan and agree how it’s safely isolated.
  2. With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
  3. Grease is scraped from the impeller blades and the inside of the housing.
  4. Blades, housing and the area around the motor are degreased with care.
  5. It’s closed up, run and checked, and photos go into your report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Clear loose items from the work area

Advice

What we’re called out for in Chalkhouse Green

Grease condenses as the air cools, and a fan out on a roof or wall often sits where the air is coolest. That makes it a natural place for grease to settle.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • A fan that has never been cleaned
  • A fan coated in grease inside its housing
  • Hot, greasy smells near the fan
  • Weak extraction at the canopy

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Chalkhouse Green (Mapledurham House is about 2.6 miles west), fitting access panels needs care.

What to look for in a quote

  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered
  • What paperwork you get at the end
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Whether VAT is included
