Ductwork cleaning across Standen

Part by part

Attenuators and discharge

The discharge is where the duct ends and air leaves the building. Grease can collect there and stain the area around it, so it’s cleaned as far as safe access allows.

Multi-storey and shared buildings

A fire in a duct in a shared building can affect far more than one kitchen, so the responsible person has more reason to keep it clean. The paperwork suits landlords and managing agents.

Ductwork cleaning in Standen

Duct Doctor has cleaned kitchen extract ductwork since 2009, working across London and the South East. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, our duct cleaning is done to BESA TR19® Grease, and our certificates are issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. The work covers vertical risers, attenuators and multi-storey ducts, and the jobs we see most are readings above 200 microns from a grease thickness test and a duct clean needed for an insurer.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

How it works

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers, and we clear up before we go. A few pictures of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Standen.

  1. We start by working out how the duct runs and where it can be opened.
  2. Grease readings are taken at set points along the duct.
  3. Access panels are opened and heavy deposits scraped out by hand.
  4. Next the ducts and risers are degreased, using whatever suits the deposit.
  5. Post-clean readings and photos go into the report, with any unreachable section listed.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

How to get a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Advice

What your team can do, and what needs us

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Grease, kitchens and Standen

Food Standards Agency data counts about 7 restaurants, cafés and canteens within about 1.5 miles of central Standen. Behind every canopy among them is a run of ductwork that collects grease out of sight. Food hygiene inspections in Standen are the job of Ashford council’s environmental health team. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Standen sits within the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

A TR19® clean in Standen does not stop at the filters: the plenum, ductwork, fan and discharge are cleaned too.

FAQs for Standen

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Standen?

Standen is in the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Standen?

That is Ashford council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Standen. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

When is the ductwork cleaned?

Only while we are working, and we work around you. Overnight and weekend work is common, so no service is lost.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes, of course. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule and quote for it.

How long does ductwork cleaning take?

It depends on the length of the duct, the number of access panels and how much grease there is. As a guide, it takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Photos often do the job, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

How much notice should we give?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Kent. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.

What ductwork cleaning cannot fix

In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • A duct that’s too small or badly routed for the kitchen (a design issue)
  • Parts of the duct with no way in
  • Leaking duct joints that need repair

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly.

What we work on in Standen

  • Bends and junctions
  • Access panels
  • Vertical risers
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Attenuators
  • Multi-storey ducts

Aftercare tips

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Diarise the next duct clean
  • Check readings when the menu changes
  • Do not block access panels with shelving or stock
  • Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned

Every panel we open is refitted when we finish, and the surrounding area is left clean. Grease and dirty water are contained and removed.

Keep to the cleaning interval on the report. If the kitchen starts cooking longer hours, the interval may need to shorten, and grease thickness testing will show it.

Do you need ductwork cleaning in Standen?

Risers carry the extract up through the building. Grease clings to the walls and can run down to the base as liquid grease runs down. Access along its height is needed to clean it properly.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • A duct clean needed for an insurer
  • A duct nobody has opened in years
  • Thick crusts of old grease along the duct
  • Grease pooling at the foot of the riser

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Benenden Hospital is the nearest hospital to Standen, about 3.5 miles south-west.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What insurance they carry
  • What records you will receive afterwards
  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
  • When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
