Ductwork cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Overton

Nobody sees duct grease building, so nobody notices it until something goes wrong. Flames pulled in from the cooking line can ignite it, carrying a fire along the duct and into rooms far from the kitchen. Removing it is the whole point. The work covers horizontal duct runs, attenuators and bends and junctions, and people most often call us about proof of duct cleaning for the insurer and duct runs that can’t be reached.

In a smaller place like Overton, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That is why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Ductwork cleaning in Overton: the local picture

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 6 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 3 sandwich bars and takeaways within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Overton. Each kitchen that cooks under a canopy sends grease-laden air into a duct, where it cools and settles. Overton sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. It’s Basingstoke and Deane council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Overton. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Mary, or anywhere in Overton, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. For kitchens close to Overton station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight. For schools such as Overton Church of England Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is typically booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

For landlords and multi-site operators

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points. For a place like Overton, we load the van from the survey notes so the work can be done in one visit where possible.

  1. First we diagnose: the route, the access and the grease levels.
  2. A fixed quote follows, based on what we found.
  3. We clean section by section, working from panel to panel.
  4. Bends, risers and the base of each riser get extra attention.
  5. The duct is signed off with readings, photos and a next clean date.

Preparing for the visit

Honest limits

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Fire dampers that don’t close (they need testing and remedials)
  • Ductwork that’s corroded, split or holed (that needs a ductwork contractor)
  • Undersized or badly laid-out ducts

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Bends and junctions
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Attenuators
  • Access panels
  • Vertical risers
  • Multi-storey ducts

What happens if it’s left?

Booking the duct clean in Overton now keeps it a planned job. The work takes from a few hours to more than one visit, depending on duct length and access, done out of hours so the kitchen keeps cooking. It’s easy to lose track of when the work was last done on a quieter site.

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.

Different parts, different methods

Vertical risers

Risers are cleaned through panels at different levels. Any part that can’t be safely reached is recorded.

Attenuators and discharge

At the end of the duct is the discharge. It can gather grease and mark the wall or roof around it, so it’s cleaned as far as safe access allows.

Looking after it afterwards

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Consider fitting panels where the report shows gaps
  • Never cook with a filter missing
  • Book the next clean before the recommended date
  • Store the certificate with the fire risk assessment

A full system clean includes a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. It records the date, the location and the technician.

The less grease gets past the canopy, the cleaner the duct stays. Clean, properly seated filters are the duct’s best protection.

FAQs for Overton

Do you cover smaller places like Overton?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Overton?

Kitchens in Overton are inspected by Basingstoke and Deane council’s environmental health officers. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

What accreditations do you have?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We have been trading since 2009 and we are fully insured.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

How do you know if the ductwork needs cleaning?

A grease thickness test gives the answer. Readings are taken by Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). A mean above 200 microns, or 500 microns at any point, means it’s due.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. We’re fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

How do you clean inside the ductwork?

We open each access panel and clean the section it reaches. Grease is scraped out first, then degreased, with readings taken before and after.

How we price ductwork cleaning

Your quote is based on your site. We take into account:

  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • How many systems or sites are involved

The cost depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.

What to send for a quote

You do not need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:

  • Any previous report or certificate
  • A few general shots of the system
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see

Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Call or email with a few details and you’ll typically have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
