How we handle canopy cleaning in Trotton
We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you have drips from the canopy onto the range and greasy streaks across the canopy, we can put it right.
In a small place like Trotton, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.
The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. That is our job.
Trotton questions
Who is the fire and rescue service for Trotton?
Fire safety enforcement in Trotton is handled by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
Which environmental health team covers Trotton?
In Trotton, it’s Chichester council that carries out food hygiene inspections. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.
How do you keep the site clean during the work?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.
Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?
Canopies in pubs, restaurants, hotels, schools, care homes, offices and other kitchens. Whatever is cooked under it, the canopy is cleaned the same thorough way, with the equipment off and cool.
Do we need to close while you work?
Usually not. Out-of-hours visits keep the disruption down. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits so parts stay in use.
What happens if you cannot reach some of it?
We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
How long is a canopy clean?
Allow a few hours for most canopies. We will confirm how long when we quote.
Does a canopy clean meet TR19?
You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it will not cover the ductwork or fan. For TR19, the whole system needs cleaning, at intervals set by BESA guidance.
What the work involves, part by part
Island canopies
Island canopies hang over cooking in the middle of the kitchen, so every face can collect grease. Each face is cleaned inside and out.
Grease troughs and gutters
A blocked or full trough is the usual cause of grease dripping from the canopy. Cleaning it clears the drip.

What else we do in Trotton
Grease, kitchens and Trotton
Kitchens in Trotton get their food hygiene inspections from Chichester council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. Trotton is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
For schools such as Stedham Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is typically booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. Cowdray House, about 3.2 miles east, is one of the historic houses near Trotton; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.

Why it’s worth doing now in Trotton
A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. A flare-up can catch it and be drawn into the plenum and duct, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. It’s simpler to plan the work at Trotton now than to arrange it in a hurry later.
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you are unsure, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.
Why us?
- Fixed quotes, normally within one working day

Between visits
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
- Check filters are not leaving gaps
- Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
- Keep grease cups and drawers emptied
Keep the photo report with your maintenance log where an inspector can see it. Photos of a clean canopy and plenum make the record easy to follow.
Tell us if the canopy starts dripping or the filters clog sooner than usual. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.
Common problems we fix in Trotton
Air straight off the range hits the canopy first. Grease from the vapour lands on the canopy’s inner surfaces, its joints and its filters before what gets through reaches the plenum.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Condensation and grease dripping together
- Canopy gutters full of old fat
- Grease filters blocking between washes
- A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Midhurst Community Hospital is the nearest hospital to Trotton, about 3 miles east.
Before you book anyone

- Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
For landlords and multi-site operators
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We’re happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
The process
The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes a few hours for most canopies. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to Trotton run smoothly.
- We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
- We protect everything below once it has cooled.
- Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- You get photos of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.
Getting ready for the visit
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
Getting a quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
