Canopy cleaning in Southborough

A greasy canopy tells an inspector a lot before they’ve opened anything. What is not seen, behind the filters, tends to be worse. Canopy cleaning deals with both, so the hood looks right and works properly. If you’re dealing with wet, greasy drips from the hood and poor capture at the hood, we can help, from grease gutters, island canopies and wall canopies onwards.

In a smaller place like Southborough, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

Think of the report as the system’s health record: a dated account with photos of everything we did. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

What we are called out for in Southborough

Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. As the canopy cools, condensation forms, carrying grease with it. Drips onto the cooking line are a common result.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Drips from the canopy onto the range
  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning
  • A hood coated in old grease

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Christ Church or elsewhere in Southborough, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether a written report and photos are included
  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered
  • How VAT is shown on the quote

Questions to ask before booking

Part by part

Pub and hotel kitchens

Pub and hotel kitchens can cook from breakfast to late evening. That’s a lot of grease on the canopy, so it may need cleaning between full TR19 cleans.

School and staff canteen kitchens

Lighter cooking still leaves grease on the canopy. BESA guidance still sets a minimum interval for the whole system, and the canopy is part of it.

Southborough: your questions answered

Will you come out to Southborough?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Southborough is covered. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Southborough during the holidays?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. Food Standards Agency records list about 18 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Southborough. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.

How far ahead should we book?

The more notice, the better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes usually come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.

What about areas you cannot get to?

They’re marked on the report. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, which we can install.

What happens to the waste?

It leaves the site with us when we go. During the work, it’s contained to keep the area clean.

How long is a canopy clean?

It takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. We will confirm how long when we quote.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.

The process

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, and we clear up before we go. Your opening hours decide when we come to Southborough, not ours.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Advice

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:

  • The number of sites or systems
  • The times the site is available
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • The condition we find in the survey

Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered and we’ll price it together.

Asking for a quote

To speed up the quote, please include:

  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Looking after it afterwards

So the system stays in good health:

  • Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine

We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. It reflects how long the kitchen cooks and how much grease we removed, in line with BESA guidance.

Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.

Grease, kitchens and Southborough

The FSA’s data shows about 14 pubs and bars registered within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Southborough. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Kitchens in Southborough get their food hygiene inspections from Tunbridge Wells council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. The fire and rescue service for Southborough is Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

A hospital like Kent and Sussex Hospital, about 1.4 miles south, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Penshurst Place is about 3.5 miles west), access may need planning.

Southborough is about 1 mile north of Royal Tunbridge Wells, in Kent. Southborough gets the same approach as every site we work on: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where necessary and a written report with photos. 922 places in Kent are on our list, large and small. There’s also a page for Maidstone, about 14 miles away.

Work in TN4 and TN2 follows the same survey, fixed quote and written report as everywhere else we cover. That includes premises on London Road, Church Road and Norton Road and nearby roads. With the A26 close by, Southborough is simple for us to get to at any hour. We also cover High Brooms (1 mile south-east), Stockland Green (1 mile west), Bidborough (1 mile north-west), Royal Tunbridge Wells (1 mile south) and Speldhurst (2 miles west). Larger places within reach include Maidstone (14 miles north-east), Sevenoaks (9 miles north), Tonbridge (3 miles north), Kings Hill (10 miles north-east), Foley Park (15 miles north-east) and Paddock Wood (6 miles east).

Not far away are Tudeley Woods RSPB reserve and Barden Lake.

Leave it or put it right?

Baked-on grease gets harder to shift the longer it stays. Heat from the range bakes canopy grease into a hard, dark layer, which makes a later clean slower and harder. Booking ahead lets us plan the trip to Southborough at a time that suits you.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.
