Canopy cleaning in Skittle Green

Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. Where that is the case, we will be clear that the ducts and fan are not included, so your records stay accurate. If you have a sticky, discoloured canopy and a greasy hood noticed by an inspector, we can help.

In a small place like Skittle Green, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

A written report with photos follows every visit, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

How the visit works

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits, and we clear up before we go. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Skittle Green and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.

How to prepare

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

Common questions in Skittle Green

Do you work overnight in Skittle Green?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. It means the site in Skittle Green keeps running as normal. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Do you cover smaller places like Skittle Green?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Skittle Green included. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not typically. We need the work area to ourselves while we are on site, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.

What information do you need?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few photos and any previous report.

How much notice do you need?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.

What about areas you can’t get to?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, which we can install.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a single café to a large school. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7, for problems that can’t wait. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

What a clean will not put right

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what canopy cleaning will not do:

  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly.

Aftercare tips

Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
  • Run the extract the whole time you’re cooking
  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day

A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.

The best thing a kitchen can do for its canopy is keep the filters clean. Wash or exchange them regularly, and make sure they’re all in place before cooking. Less grease gets into the plenum as a result.

Grease, kitchens and Skittle Green

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 3 restaurants, cafés and works canteens within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Skittle Green. Any of those kitchens with a canopy has a hood that needs cleaning inside and out. The fire and rescue service for Skittle Green is Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. In Skittle Green, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Buckinghamshire council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Skittle Green is Thame Community Hospital, about 4.1 miles north-west. Where a hall near Church of the Holy Trinity, or anywhere in Skittle Green, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We check:

  • How big the system is
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Travel, parking and unloading

The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.

Helping us quote

You don’t need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • A few general shots of the system
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use

Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you’ll normally have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

Part by part

Island canopies

An island canopy is open on all sides, so every face can collect grease. We clean all of them, inside and out.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Staff in pub and hotel kitchens work under the canopy all day, so drips and smells soon become a daily nuisance. A thorough clean puts that right.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in Skittle Green and across Buckinghamshire. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

Common problems we fix in Skittle Green

Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Canopy gutters full of old fat
  • An EHO comment about the canopy
  • A filter housing caked in grease
  • Condensation running down the canopy

For schools such as Princes Risborough School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • Whether a survey comes first
  • What records you will receive afterwards
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
