Canopy cleaning in Radlett: the local picture

There are about 24 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 7 takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Radlett, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. Radlett is covered by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. It’s Hertsmere council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Radlett. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Church and community hall kitchens, near St John or anywhere around Radlett, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. For kitchens close to Radlett station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.

How we handle canopy cleaning in Radlett

Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. The work covers plenum chambers, baffle filters and grease gutters, and the jobs we see most are overflowing grease troughs and gutters and wet, greasy drips from the hood.

Kitchens around a place like Radlett are often in older buildings or single-storey extensions, where the duct may cross a roof void or climb an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Between visits

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Keep the fan on through service
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill
  • Keep every filter in place while cooking

We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Filters are back in place and seated properly ready for the next service.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

What the work involves, part by part

Island canopies

An island canopy is open on all sides, so every face can collect grease. Each face is cleaned inside and out.

Wall canopies

The back of a wall canopy is hard to reach and easy to miss. We remove the filters to reach it and scrape it clean.

Why it’s worth doing now in Radlett

Grease on the canopy is sitting just above the heat source. A flare-up can catch it and be drawn into the plenum and duct, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. Booking ahead lets us plan the trip to Radlett at a time that suits you.

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before we start.

How it works

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes a few hours for most canopies. Everything the job in Radlett needs is worked out beforehand, from the survey.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Let us know about parking and loading

Getting a quote

To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, a few photos and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We take into account:

  • How easy every part is to reach
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered and we’ll price it together.

Asking for a quote

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • A few general shots of the system

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Radlett

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We’re happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in Radlett and across Hertfordshire. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Radlett

Air straight off the range hits the canopy first. Grease from the vapour lands on the canopy’s inner surfaces, its joints and its filters before what gets through reaches the plenum.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
  • A sticky, discoloured canopy
  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning

Term dates shape school work: for a school like St John's Church of England Infant and Nursery School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • What paperwork you get at the end
  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • What insurance they carry

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Radlett: your questions answered

Can you work in Radlett outside opening hours?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. It means the site in Radlett keeps running as normal. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Radlett?

Fire safety enforcement in Radlett is handled by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.

Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?

The filters come out so the plenum behind them can be cleaned, then clean and refit them. We’ll tell you if any need replacing.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Commercial premises of every kind: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. We fit the work around how the site operates.

Why is my canopy dripping grease?

A canopy only holds so much grease. Once the troughs and plenum are full, it runs down and drips, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not usually. We need the work area to ourselves while we’re on site, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.
