Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Portsea
Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. In that case, the report makes clear what was and wasn’t cleaned, so your records stay accurate. Common call-outs are for a sticky, discoloured canopy and a plenum thick with grease behind the filters, across canopy light fittings, wall canopies and island canopies.
In a smaller place like Portsea, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.
The paperwork matters as much as the work. Each visit is written up with photos, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

How the visit works
There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes a few hours for most canopies. Tell us about any gates, ladders or locked plant areas at your site near Portsea when you book.
- We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
- Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
- We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.
Before we arrive
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
Ask for a quote
For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You’ll normally have a quote within one working day.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
Portsea: your questions answered
Which fire service covers Portsea?
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Portsea. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.
Does coastal air change anything about canopy cleaning in Portsea?
It can. Being within about 1 mile of the sea means more corrosion on metalwork in Portsea than inland. Rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings are checked for corrosion as well as grease.
What’s TR19?
It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Not typically. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. We’re fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must reduce fire risk, and many insurers can refuse or reduce a claim without proof of cleaning.
What do you do to protect the area?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. The work is kept contained and clean down when we finish.
Do you work in Portsea?
Yes. Our technicians work in Portsea, as part of our area across London and the South East.
How the job changes from site to site
Plenums and filter housings
Filter housings hold the filters in place, and their channels fill with grease. We clean them so the filters sit tight and leave no gaps.
Wall canopies
The back of a wall canopy is hard to reach and easy to miss. With the filters out we can get to it and degrease it properly.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.
Signs you need canopy cleaning in Portsea
Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. As the canopy cools, condensation forms, carrying grease with it. The result is sticky streaks and drips onto the range.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
- A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
- Drips from the canopy onto the range
- Poor capture at the hood
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Ann's Church or elsewhere in Portsea, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
What to look for in a quote
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
- Whether they recommend a next date
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Whether a written report and photos are included
Aftercare tips
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:
- Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
- Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
- Leave the extract running until cooking stops
- Report new drips or smells from the canopy
Anything worth knowing goes into the report: damaged filters, gaps around the housing or troughs that need emptying more often. We keep it to what matters.
Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It will not replace a professional clean, but it slows the build-up you can see.
What canopy cleaning can’t fix
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
- Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
- A dirty extract fan further along the system
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will say what we think before you book.

Canopy cleaning in Portsea: the local picture
At about 1 mile from the coast, Portsea is close enough for sea air to matter. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. There are about 290 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 115 takeaways and sandwich shops across Portsea and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. Fire safety in Portsea falls to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
A kitchen near Portsmouth Harbour station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Royal Portsmouth Hospital is the nearest hospital to Portsea, about 0.8 miles east.
