Canopy cleaning near Oaklands

Canopy cleaning in Oaklands, done properly

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers grease gutters, plenum chambers and canopy light fittings, and common reasons people get in touch are grease channels that no longer drain and heavy deposits behind the grease filters.

For a smaller kitchen near Oaklands, a TR19® clean is the same job as anywhere: canopy, filters, plenum, duct, fan and discharge. The visit is booked around your opening hours, and the journey is planned ahead.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. We are also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. That’s our job.

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

For landlords and multi-site operators

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

What happens on the day

The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. In a smaller place like Oaklands, parking is rarely the issue, but tell us about gates, roof access and opening hours.

  1. The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

How to get a quote

Here’s what helps us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, a few pictures and any previous report or certificate. Once you have those, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

What affects the quote in Oaklands

You’ll get a fixed price before we start. It’s based on:

  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • How big the system is
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • The condition of the system

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What to send for a quote

To help us quote quickly, please include:

  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • The site address and the type of premises

To get a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll usually have a quote within one working day.

Oaklands: your questions answered

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Oaklands in the summer holidays?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 6 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Oaklands. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.

Do you work at weekends in Oaklands?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The work in Oaklands can fit around your hours. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we will book within them.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® itself is not law; it’s a BESA specification. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

Is the inside of the hood cleaned?

The whole canopy, inside and out. We also remove the filters and clean the plenum and housing behind them, since that’s where grease hides.

Do you work in Oaklands?

Yes. Our technicians work in Oaklands, within the South East and London area we cover.

What happens to the waste?

It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes, always. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.

Different parts, different methods

Island canopies

The underside of an island canopy is in full view, so the finish matters. It’s degreased and photographed for your report.

Grease troughs and gutters

Drips from the canopy edge often start in a full gutter. We clean it out so the grease has somewhere to go.

What we are called out for in Oaklands

Air straight off the range hits the canopy first. Fat in that air settles on the inside of the hood, in its seams and on the filters, and the plenum behind them collects the rest.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Condensation and grease dripping together
  • Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
  • An EHO comment about the canopy
  • A filter housing caked in grease

Historic houses near Oaklands, such as Digswell House about 1.8 miles south, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes.

Comparing quotes

  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • What hours they’ll be on site

Questions to ask before booking

Honest limits

We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
  • A canopy undersized for the equipment

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Island canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Wall canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Baffle filters

Oaklands kitchens: local notes

The Food Standards Agency lists about 13 pubs, bars and clubs as registered food businesses in and around Oaklands, up to about a mile and a half out. Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Oaklands sits within the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. In Oaklands, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Welwyn Hatfield council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Queen Elizabeth II Hospital (about 4.2 miles south), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Oaklands Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.
