Canopy cleaning in Northaw
Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. Where that is the case, we will be clear that the ducts and fan aren’t included, so your records stay accurate. Common call-outs are for overflowing grease troughs and gutters and filters that never seem to stay clean, across canopy light fittings, grease gutters and wall canopies.
Somewhere as small as Northaw, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Questions from Northaw
Can a school canteen extract in Northaw be done out of term time?
Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 8 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Northaw. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.
Can the work in Northaw be done at night or at weekends?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. The site is handed back ready to open. When you give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos, mention when the site is quiet.
How far ahead should we book?
Earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours work. We typically quote within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
Why does grease run off the canopy edge?
Full gutters and a heavily coated plenum are the common causes. With nowhere to collect, the grease overflows, and condensation can carry it too. A canopy clean sorts it out.
How much does canopy cleaning cost?
We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. You get a fixed price before work begins.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Not usually. Out-of-hours visits keep the disruption down. Bigger sites can be done in stages to keep things running.
What about areas you can’t get to?
We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.
Which sectors do you work in?
Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a single café to a large school. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
Why act early in Northaw
Getting the canopy cleaned in Northaw now saves a bigger job later. It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, done while the kitchen is closed. Put off, the grease simply moves further into the system. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before work begins.

Keeping the system healthy
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Report new drips or smells from the canopy
- Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
- Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
- Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
File the report alongside your fire risk assessment, so it’s ready when an EHO, insurer or fire officer asks. Before and after photos speak for themselves.
Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It won’t replace a professional clean, but it slows the build-up you can see.
For landlords and multi-site operators
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Every visit ends with a dated report and photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.
What the work involves, part by part
Island canopies
Island canopies often have filters on two sides. Both sides are taken apart and cleaned.
Plenums and filter housings
A plenum that hasn’t been cleaned for a long time can hold a thick layer of grease. Heavy deposits are scraped out by hand before degreasing.
Common problems we fix in Northaw
However carefully a kitchen in Northaw is run, the canopy still collects grease. That grease is fuel sitting right above the heat, so a flare-up near a greasy hood can quickly become a fire.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- Greasy streaks across the canopy
- Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
- Condensation running down the canopy
- A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
Bursars and site managers at schools such as Northaw Church of England Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- What paperwork you get at the end
- How VAT is shown on the quote
What a clean won’t put right
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
- A dirty extract fan further along the system
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly.

What happens on the day
When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the photos you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. After that, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Northaw knowing what to expect.
- The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.
Before we arrive
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
