Canopy cleaning in Newell Green
Canopy cleaning is part of every full TR19® Grease clean, but some sites need the canopy done between full cleans. In that case, the report makes clear what was and wasn’t cleaned, so your records stay accurate. We’re often asked to deal with an EHO comment about the canopy and a filter housing caked in grease, across baffle filters, island canopies and plenum chambers.
Somewhere as small as Newell Green, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.
The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

What we do, step by step
We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before we start, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Somewhere as small as Newell Green, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.
- We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
- Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
- With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
- Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
- Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

How the job changes from site to site
Plenums and filter housings
The plenum is the space behind the filters where air gathers before entering the duct. Grease that slips past the filters settles there, so it’s scraped and degreased on every canopy clean.
Wall canopies
At the back of the canopy, behind the filters, grease builds up unseen. With the filters out we can get to it and scrape it clean.

Newell Green kitchens: local notes
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 51 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 12 takeaways in and around Newell Green, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. Fire safety in Newell Green falls to Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Food hygiene inspections in Newell Green are the job of Bracknell Forest council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Michael and All Angels or elsewhere in Newell Green, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. School kitchens, at schools like Sandy Lane Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

Newell Green questions
Do you work at weekends in Newell Green?
Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. Your customers, staff or residents in Newell Green needn’t be disturbed. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we will book within them.
Do you cover smaller places like Newell Green?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
What should I send you?
A short description and a few pictures, with the address and opening hours. If we need more, we’ll ask.
Who is the responsible person?
The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. In shared or managed buildings, a landlord, facilities manager or managing agent can share the duty.
What does canopy cleaning cost?
We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. You get a fixed price before work begins.
Are you accredited?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.
What happens to the waste?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We do not leave it behind.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
Between visits
Aftercare is simple, and it helps at the next visit:
- Clean the baffle filters often
- Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
- Check all filters are fitted before service
- Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
The report gives a recommended next clean date. It reflects how long the kitchen cooks and how much grease we removed, in line with BESA guidance.
A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.
Signs you need canopy cleaning in Newell Green
Most canopies have troughs or channels that catch running grease. Left to fill up, they spill over, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- A filter housing caked in grease
- Grease filters blocking between washes
- Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Newell Green is Heatherwood Hospital, about 3 miles south-east.
What your quote should include
- What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed
- Proof of insurance
- How VAT is shown on the quote
- Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
Managing agents and facilities teams in Newell Green
If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.
Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.
What affects the quote in Newell Green
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- The condition we find in the survey
- The scale of the work
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.
Asking for a quote
You don’t need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- A few general shots of the system
There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.
