How we handle canopy cleaning in Langley End

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you have a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection and fat running down the front of the hood, we can put it right.

Somewhere as small as Langley End, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Different parts, different methods

Island canopies

Island canopies often have filters on two sides. Both sides are taken apart and cleaned.

School and staff canteen kitchens

Lighter cooking still leaves grease on the canopy. The whole system still needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance, and the canopy is part of it.

How we price canopy cleaning

The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:

  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Travel, parking and unloading

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you will get one fixed quote.

Helping us quote

You do not need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To get going, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

Why act early in Langley End

A blocked plenum and clogged filters cut the airflow at the canopy. The kitchen gets hotter and smokier, and the fan works harder for less. A clean canopy and plenum let the extract do its job. In a place like Langley End, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you are not sure what’s needed, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What canopy cleaning looks like in Langley End

The Food Standards Agency lists about 3 pubs and bars as registered food businesses across Langley End and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Langley End sits within the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Food hygiene inspections in Langley End are the job of North Hertfordshire council’s environmental health team. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

School kitchens, at schools like The John Henry Newman School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. A hospital like Lister Hospital, about 2.6 miles north-east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near All Saints Church or elsewhere in Langley End, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Langley End: your questions answered

Do you work at weekends in Langley End?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. The work in Langley End can fit around your hours. Just call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with your opening times and we will plan around them.

Do you work in villages like Langley End?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Langley End is covered. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. We always survey first, from your photos and details, or with a visit where necessary. A fixed quote follows.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.

Are you insured?

Yes. Full insurance covers our work and have been trading since 2009.

Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?

TR19® Grease is about the whole extract, from canopy to discharge. Cleaning the canopy alone leaves the ducts, risers and fan untouched, and the report will say what was covered.

How long will it take to clean the canopy?

It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Your quote will give a time.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes, of course. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we’ll suggest a schedule and quote for it.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Langley End

From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we will send a fixed quote.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Honest limits

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work can’t put right:

  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line
  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think.

Where we work

  • Plenum chambers
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters

How the visit works

We are used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Langley End can be planned properly.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by pictures or in person.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

How to get a quote

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.
