Canopy cleaning in Foscot

The canopy is the part of the extract everyone in the kitchen sees. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. If you have an EHO comment about the canopy and grease channels that no longer drain, we can help.

In a village or hamlet like Foscot, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.

The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

FAQs for Foscot

Do you work in villages like Foscot?

Yes. Foscot is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

Which environmental health team covers Foscot?

That’s West Oxfordshire council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Foscot. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We carry full insurance, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

How much notice should we give?

Book as early as you can for planned work, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

Why is my canopy dripping grease?

A full trough, gaps around the filters or a coated plenum. We clean all three and point out anything that is causing it.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, as well as food production and leisure sites.

Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?

The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not typically. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.

Why deal with it now?

Grease dripping from the hood can fall onto food, pans and worktops. It’s a food hygiene concern as much as a fire concern, and environmental health officers look at the cleanliness of equipment, extraction included. A fault that closes a site in a village like Foscot affects everyone who depends on it.

The cost depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Foscot

Grease doesn’t build up any differently in Foscot: the hours and the type of cooking decide how fast. Frying and grilling load a canopy far faster than steaming or boiling.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • An EHO comment about the canopy
  • A hood coated in old grease
  • Fat running down the front of the hood

Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Leonard or anywhere around Foscot, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Questions to ask before you book

  • If they look at the system before pricing
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • Whether the quote shows VAT

Questions to ask before you book

Between visits

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Keep the fan on through service
  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily

Keep the photo report with your maintenance log where an inspector can see it. Photos of a clean canopy and plenum make the record easy to follow.

A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

When something else is needed

In fairness, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Where we work

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Grease gutters
  • Island canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Wall canopies

What staff can safely do

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

What the work involves, part by part

School and staff canteen kitchens

School and canteen kitchens often cook to set hours, so the canopy can be cleaned when the kitchen is closed. We often clean them in holidays or at weekends.

Island canopies

An island canopy is open on all sides, so every face can collect grease. We clean all of them, inside and out.

The process

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Seeing the system in pictures first means the trip to Foscot can be planned properly.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Clean filters are refitted and before and after photos go into your report.

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Foscot kitchens: local notes

In Foscot, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from West Oxfordshire council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Foscot sits within the area of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. If you cook for passing trade around Kingham station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Moore Cottage Hospital is the nearest hospital to Foscot, about 5 miles west.
