Canopy cleaning in Flamstead

Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but some sites need the canopy done between full cleans. In that case, the report makes clear what was and wasn’t cleaned, so your records stay accurate. If you have smoke hanging around the canopy during service and a plenum thick with grease behind the filters, we can help, from canopy light fittings, baffle filters and grease gutters onwards.

In a small place like Flamstead, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. That is why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Keeping the system healthy

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood

We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Every filter is refitted and checked ready for the next service.

Do not let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Flamstead

Filters that are missing, damaged or badly seated leave gaps. More grease reaches the plenum and housing than they’re designed to take, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Condensation running down the canopy
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
  • Overflowing grease troughs and gutters

Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Childwickbury Manor is about 4.6 miles south-east), access may need planning.

Our hiring checklist

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

What canopy cleaning can’t fix

Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we will tell you before work begins. It doesn’t solve:

  • A canopy undersized for the equipment
  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
  • Electrical faults in the canopy

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Grease gutters

The process

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. All told, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Flamstead before we set off.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

How to prepare

  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet

Advice

Canopy cleaning in Flamstead: the local picture

The FSA’s data shows about 4 pubs and bars registered across Flamstead and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Flamstead is covered by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. It’s Dacorum council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Flamstead. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Flamstead Village School or anywhere near Flamstead, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Hemel Hempstead Hospital (about 5 miles south), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

How the job changes from site to site

Grease troughs and gutters

A blocked or full trough is the usual cause of grease dripping from the canopy. We clean it out so the grease has somewhere to go.

Pub and hotel kitchens

In pubs and hotels, the kitchen may be busy for much of the day. That is a lot of grease on the canopy, so it may need cleaning between full TR19 cleans.

Fixed quotes for canopy cleaning in Flamstead

We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:

  • Parking and loading at the site
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • The times the site is available
  • Any permits to work or inductions

One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You will have a fixed price before any work starts.

What we need to know

There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it

Flamstead: your questions answered

Can you get to a site in Flamstead?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Flamstead included. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Which fire authority looks after Flamstead?

That’s Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Usually not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Bigger sites can be done in stages to keep things running.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

What should I send you?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few photos and any previous report.

What do you do with what you remove?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We do not leave it behind.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and the details are available on request.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Photos often do the job, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.
