Aftercare tips

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:

  • Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill
  • Clean the baffle filters often

The report gives a recommended next clean date. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.

Tell us if the canopy starts dripping or the filters clog sooner than usual. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Biggin

Has the canopy started to drip or look neglected? A photo of the canopy and filters is a good start when you phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos, and you will get a fixed price, normally within one working day. If you have a filter housing caked in grease and wet, greasy drips from the hood, we can help, from plenum chambers, island canopies and wall canopies onwards.

In a small place like Biggin, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. We are also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

How the job changes from site to site

Grease troughs and gutters

Drips from the canopy edge often start in a full gutter. We clean it out so the grease has somewhere to go.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Few pubs and hotels can shut the kitchen for a day. We clean the canopy overnight or between services so the kitchen keeps trading.

What canopy cleaning cannot fix

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Bent or broken filters
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

What the work covers

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Baffle filters

Leave it or put it right?

Fresh grease comes off far more easily than old. Over months, the heat hardens it into a stubborn coating, which makes a later clean slower and harder. A fault that closes a site in a village like Biggin affects everyone who depends on it.

What you pay depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

Why book with us

  • Out-of-hours work and a 24/7 emergency line
  • CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001
  • A single point of contact for sites across the South East and London
  • Trading since 2009

For landlords and multi-site operators

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we will send a fixed quote.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

What we do, step by step

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, and we clear up before we go. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to Biggin.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

How to prepare

  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Getting a quote

Here’s what helps us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, pictures of the system and any previous report or certificate. Once you have those, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

What canopy cleaning looks like in Biggin

At about 2 miles from the coast, Biggin is close enough for sea air to matter. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. There are about 17 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 20 sandwich bars and takeaways across Biggin and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Any of those kitchens with a canopy has a hood that needs cleaning inside and out. Food hygiene inspections in Biggin are the job of Thurrock council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

A hospital like Gravesham Community Hospital, about 2.2 miles south, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Mary or elsewhere in Biggin, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Biggin is about 2 miles east of Grays, in Thurrock. We provide canopy cleaning for businesses, landlords and public buildings in Biggin and the rest of Thurrock. We cover 26 places across Thurrock, from busy centres to quieter spots. Our Maidstone page covers sites nearby (16 miles or so).

Work in RM16 is surveyed, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Nearby, we also carry out canopy cleaning in West Tilbury (1 mile east), Chadwell St Mary (1 mile north), Tilbury (1 mile south-west), Orsett Heath (1 mile north-west) and Little Thurrock (2 miles north-west). Questions from Biggin

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Biggin?

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Biggin. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Will you come out to Biggin?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Biggin is covered. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we’ll talk you through the next steps.

Are you accredited?

We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a single café to a large school. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

Allow a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Your quote will give a time.

Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?

In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before any work starts, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

Common problems we fix in Biggin

The canopy takes the hottest, wettest air in the kitchen. Grease from the vapour lands on the canopy’s inner surfaces, its joints and its filters, and the plenum behind them collects the rest.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters

School kitchens, at schools like Tilbury Pioneer Academy for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether they’re fully insured
  • How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • What records you’ll receive afterwards
