Canopy cleaning for sites in Andover Down

Canopy cleaning in Andover Down

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers wall canopies, plenum chambers and canopy light fittings, and people most often call us about grease dripping from the canopy edge and a sticky, discoloured canopy.

In a village or hamlet like Andover Down, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

How the visit works

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and the same goes into the written report. All told, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Andover Down before we set off.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

When it’s something else

Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:

  • A canopy undersized for the equipment
  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll tell you honestly.

How much does canopy cleaning cost in Andover Down?

Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. For a quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the site type, opening hours and a few photos.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

What accreditations do you have?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® itself isn’t law; it’s a BESA specification. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it will not cover the ductwork or fan. For TR19, the whole system needs cleaning, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

How do you protect the area?

We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

Andover Down kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 5 restaurants, cafés and canteens across Andover Down and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. The fire and rescue service for Andover Down is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. In Andover Down, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Test Valley council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

School kitchens, at schools like Pilgrims' Cross CofE Aided Primary School for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

How we price canopy cleaning

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. The quote depends on:

  • The condition of the system
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • How many systems or sites are involved

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before work begins.

What we need to know

To speed up the quote, please include:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Different parts, different methods

Island canopies

With filters on more than one side, an island canopy has more plenum to clean. Both sides are taken apart and cleaned.

Pub and hotel kitchens

In a pub or hotel, the canopy is often in view of staff all day, so drips and smells soon become a daily nuisance. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.

When to call us in Andover Down

Air straight off the range hits the canopy first. Grease from the vapour lands on the canopy’s inner surfaces, its joints and its filters before what gets through reaches the plenum.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Condensation running down the canopy
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Andover War Memorial Hospital about 2.6 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Proof of insurance
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • When the next visit should be, and why
  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
