AHU cleaning in Stone, done properly
Every supply and extract system relies on the air handling unit at its centre: it draws air in, filters it, heats or cools it and pushes it round the ductwork. Whatever builds up inside it travels with that air, which is why we clean the unit itself, not just the ducts. If you have leaves and litter drawn into the unit and dirty coils holding back the airflow, we can help, from dampers and louvres, filter sections and supply and extract fans onwards.
In a smaller place like Stone, buildings with ducted ventilation are more likely to be a school, a surgery, a care home or a small business unit than an office block. Even a small system collects dust in its ducts and filters.
The report is your system’s health record: dated, with pictures, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal, ready for your insurer.

Stone: your questions answered
Can the work in Stone be done at night or at weekends?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. It means the site in Stone keeps running as normal. When you call 0345 646 2711 or email us, mention when the site is quiet.
Do you clean school ventilation in Stone in the holidays?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. There are about 5 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Stone. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
What’s TR19?
A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
Which parts of an air handling unit do you clean?
The main parts are the filters, coils, drain tray, fan and inside of the casing. The survey confirms what’s in your unit before we quote.
What happens if you can’t reach some of it?
We never leave them off the paperwork. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.
What does AHU cleaning cost?
Size, condition, access and working hours all affect the cost. Ask us for a fixed quote, usually ready within one working day.
How often do AHUs need cleaning?
Inspection under TR19® Air decides it. A hard-working unit, or one serving a hospital or care home, may need cleaning more often.
Do you clean the ductwork as well?
Yes. Ductwork is cleaned through access panels, and any sections we can’t reach are noted in the report, with new panels fitted where necessary.
Between visits
No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:
- Make sure the unit’s access doors open easily
- Clear leaves and litter away from the intake
- Keep filter changes on time and recorded
- Make sure condensate is draining away
When we’ve closed the unit up, it can be restarted with your site team. Check the drain tray is emptying over the first few days to make sure it stays clear.
Regular filter changes are the best protection an AHU has. Once filters clog, dirt starts getting past them.
Ventilation in Stone buildings
The FSA’s food hygiene register lists about 5 schools, colleges and universities, about 17 caring premises (care homes, nurseries and hospitals) and about 4 hotels and guest houses with registered kitchens or food service in and around Stone, up to about a mile and a half out. Classrooms, bedrooms and care spaces are often served by ducted air, and that ductwork collects dust over time. At about 16 miles from central London, Stone sits well inside the area we cover. Visits are booked around your hours, evenings and weekends included. Darent Valley Hospital is the nearest hospital, about 1 mile south-west of Stone. Clean air matters most where people are unwell, and that’s as true in a care home as in a hospital.
Classrooms and halls at schools such as Stone St Mary's CofE Primary School are easiest to work in when pupils are away. If you run an office near Stone Crossing station, its supply ductwork can gather dust for years before anyone looks inside. Darent Valley Hospital, about 1 mile south-west, is the nearest hospital to Stone, and healthcare sites of every size need their supply air kept clean.

What AHU cleaning cannot fix
Not every problem is solved by AHU cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:
- A system that is undersized for the building
- Dirty ducts beyond the unit itself
- Mechanical faults with motors, belts or bearings
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will say what we think before you book.
Where we work
- Heating and cooling coils
- Internal panels
- Dampers and louvres
- Drain trays
- Filter sections
- Supply and extract fans
How it works
We’re used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. The visit itself takes half a day to a full day per unit, with large plant planned over several shifts. For a place like Stone, we load the van from the survey notes so the work can be done in one visit where possible.
- We survey the unit from photos or on site and agree what’s included.
- The unit is shut down with your site team and the area protected.
- We clean or change the filters as agreed, then clean the coils, fan and internal panels.
- We clean out the drain tray and make sure it drains.
- You get a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
Getting ready for the visit
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
How to get a quote
Quotes are quick. Send a few details and pictures, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

What affects the cost of AHU cleaning
Sites vary more than people expect. The main factors:
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- Travel, parking and unloading
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before we start.
What to send for a quote
What to send for a quote:
- Problems your staff have spotted
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- A few general shots of the system
- The site address and the type of premises
For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You will normally have a quote within one working day.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across Kent. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
