AHU cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Childrey
An air handling unit is the heart of a building’s ventilation: it draws air in, filters it, heats or cools it and pushes it round the ductwork. Anything that collects inside the unit can end up in the rooms it serves, which is why we clean the unit itself, not just the ducts. The work covers dampers and louvres, internal panels and supply and extract fans, and common reasons people get in touch are fan sections that haven’t been cleaned in years and stale or musty smells from the ventilation.
Somewhere as small as Childrey, ducted ventilation is typically limited to a school, a care home, a surgery or a converted business building, wherever there is one, but where it’s fitted, it needs the same inspection and cleaning as anywhere.
We have been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.

Questions from Childrey
Do you work in villages like Childrey?
Yes, Childrey is part of our area, however small the site. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
Do you clean school ventilation in Childrey in the holidays?
Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. With about 2 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Childrey, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.
Do you do ventilation duct cleaning too?
Yes. Ductwork is cleaned through access panels, and any sections we cannot reach are noted in the report, and new panels can be fitted.
Are you accredited?
Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.
Is there a report after cleaning?
Yes. You get a TR19® certificate plus before and after pictures. They’re worth keeping with the plant records.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and we will quote them together.
How long will the unit be out of action?
The work takes anything from half a day for one small unit to several shifts for a plant room full of them. Bigger units can be phased, and you can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line to plan it.
How do you protect the area?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. The work is kept contained and clean down when we finish.

How we price AHU cleaning
We don’t publish a price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- The size of the system
- What state the system is in
- The number of sites or systems
Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before we start.
What we need to know
We can often survey from pictures. The most useful are:
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your pictures and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price, before work begins.
How the job changes from site to site
Internal casing and panels
Access doors and panels are opened in turn and closed properly afterwards before the unit is handed back.
Fans and fan sections
Every bit of air passes the fan, so a dirty fan sends dirt downstream. The impeller, its housing and the fan chamber are cleaned.
Keeping the system healthy
So the system stays in good health:
- Flag stale or damp smells in the supply air
- Keep filter changes on time and recorded
- Store the TR19 paperwork where auditors can find it
- Diary the inspection date recommended in the report
If the ductwork hasn’t been cleaned, consider it next. A clean unit feeding dirty ducts only solves half the problem, and we can survey both.
Make sure access doors and panels on the unit open easily. Sections that are awkward to open are the ones that get skipped.
How the visit works
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. The middle part takes longest, which takes from a few hours for a compact unit to a day or more for a large one. Somewhere as small as Childrey, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.
- First we agree when the unit can be switched off, including evenings or weekends.
- We take before photos of each section of the unit.
- Filters, coils and internal surfaces are cleaned from intake to discharge.
- We finish with the fan section and the drain tray.
- After pictures are taken and the certificate issued.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Clear the space around the work
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
How to get a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.
Why it’s worth doing now in Childrey
A slimy drain tray only gets worse. Left alone, it can overflow, leak into the plant area or ceiling below and spread smells through the system. Clearing it now is a much smaller job. In a small place like Childrey, a system that fails can take a site out of use.
No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.
